the new year (& linux)

looks like 2026 is around the corner. 2025 was pretty interesting and i'm satisfied with the progress i've made on further learning a couple subjects. currently i'm on the cusp of a lot of things which i will get into the more frivolous details of that here: i got a new secondhand laptop and computer chair. i have yet to replace this giant stupid monolith of a closet in my room with a simple rack and something on the wall for storing miscellaneous things, it'd clear up a lot of space. about the laptop; it's fragile and came with a load of dead pixels and even some mild bleeding, i don't really mind that because this is the machine i'll be learning linux on. i've installed a copy of linux mint because it looks like windows, in fact i near immediately jumped to ricing (let's be real, that is like half the fun), to kind of make it look like windows 95 because i like looking at it. even on a surface level this has honestly been very exciting and having to manually type out commands in a terminal scratches the same itch as working on this website, i guess that makes sense. i'm hoping that using this OS will lead to discovering stuff i can implement everywhere else.

besides that, as you can see i've moved my music to the site: i like having everything in one place where i get to control how it is displayed so it seemed appropriate. ideally i could do the same for videos but that's a whole other can of worms. overall if there is any kind of "new years resolutions" it'd be the task of reorganizing and streamlining a bunch of (new) shit but i can't make any promises.

here's to a new year and the purchasing of more cheez-its.

the blue age

look. i know this website and everything around it has been red for nearly its entire existence, BUT: i have been leaning to electric blues and yellows. red is a cozier color, i agree! in fact i am having trouble letting go of what is at this point the iconic meat background and i can't actually find something better as a wallpaper at the moment, so instead of achieving what i originally wanted, something less ridiculous-looking, i instead managed to make it look even more outlandish. for now. perhaps i'll implement a way to pick from a couple layouts in the future, i just feel the need to stay consistent with the new landing page right now. i think i'll continue to implement small changes besides this over the course of the next one or two months.

websitering and headphonering

ironically while pondering whether or not i should keep the log around as not much interesting tends to happen and i can barely be arsed writing that stuff down, i realized i do actually need a place to babble about what is happening behind the scenes here, and with that i mean mostly just sitting on the website because "i do actually want this to be here before i put it back up" before getting distracted and working on stuff entirely unrelated for like two months, so i decided to just finish the stuff that was already pretty much done and everything else's just gonna remain missing.

fortunately it is not nothing, as you can see i've implemented an iframe to give you a smoother browsing experience. i am a big fan of it myself.

so while i am at it i will talk a bit about what is at least for me a big change considering i use it more than i don't; headphones. that is right, my final pair of philips shb 7150s seem to have finally given out for the same reason my two previous copies have; the charging port is fucked. they don't produce them anymore and these were already second-hand so i decided that i will be picking up the beyerdynamics i had lying around after these kicked the bucket. if you are wondering why i didn't start using them immediately, personally, they sound like shit by default. i don't know if it is because the jump from my previous headphones to these is that stark of a change but what immediately rustled my jimmies is that the middle frequencies felt so far in the background it was like i was listening to music coming from a different room. it wasn't "there".

long story short, i EQ'd these puppies to sound like my previous headphones and now they're actually quite nice! i've read about the highs being very shrill on these which is also something i noticed myself so i lowered that stuff a little too. now my only problems are that i need to purchase a DAC as they're a bit quiet without that and considering the bulky cable and all that i do need another pair of headphones for whenever i'm traveling. also some songs just don't sound that great on them but that is to be expected. with them being open-back, ambient music plays especially nice on these. but would i recommend them? not really...
